Curricular Connection

Computer study is an integrated part of the IB-PYP Units. Students from Kindergarten to 5th grade meet in computer study class once a week. They learn a wide scope of computer skills by working on activities and projects correlated with PYP Unit contents. Below is the technology curriculum plan for August and September.

Kindergarten

PYP Unit: We are Family

Technology Connection:

Computer Operation & Graphic Design

Project: My Family is...
Students will learn how to operate a computer in the first three weeks. Basic mouse skills will be covered and students will have an opportunity to stretch their fine motor skills through a series of online multimedia activities that involve the alphabet family.  Basic graphic design tools will be introduced to students in the second three weeks, students will learn how to use the tools to create a family house illustration. We call this project “My Family/House is … (warm, cozy, clean, happy …). Our Kindergarten classrooms will collaborate with the lab and each student will choose an adjective to describe his/her house. This project will tie with the "We Are Family" PYP unit.

Grade 1-2 PYP Unit: Peace Begins with Us
Technology Connection: Graphic Design & Illustrations

Project: Goofus & Galant
Our first and second grade classes will begin the year with the Graphic Design and Illustration unit. We will first review the graphic design tools in KidPix and create our self-portraits in the computer lab as a warm-up project. After completing the self portrait project, our first and second grade classrooms will collaborate with the computer lab to work on our "Goofus & Galant" story and illustration project as the unit assessment. More complex computer based graphic design techniques will be covered in the unit and the lesson plans are designed to encourage students to let their creativity shine.

Grade 3 Touch Typing Foundamentals
Technology Connection:

Touch Typing

The 3rd grade classes will focus on the touch typing fundamentals in the first 6 weeks. Students will work on the body postures and finger positions for touch typing. Touch typing related health issues will be covered. Getting familiar with the key locations on the keyboard is one of the unit objectives. Accuracy and speed will be emphasized through the unit. Homework will be assigned weekly. Students are required to do homework practice 15 minutes daily to reinforce the skills.

Grade 4-5 PYP Unit: Moving, Moving, Moving
Technology Connection: Information Organization

Project: Genealogy--Family Tree
We will cover the computer based information organization skills in the "Moving, Moving, Moving" PYP unit in August and September. Students will learn how to use Inspiration software to outline ideas and visualize workflows and relationships. As a PYP and technology connection, our 4th and 5th grade classrooms will work on the genealogy-family tree project. Students will conduct interviews and researches about their family heritage and construct their family trees in Inspiration.

Grade 6-8 Technology Mini-courses
Computer BasicsIn the Computer Basics class, our 6 grade students are exploring constructing PowerPoint presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint 2007, which is the most updated presentation tool! See the course details.
